Black History Fact: Macon B. Allen

allen

Macon Bolling Allen is both the first African American licensed to practice law and to hold a judicial position in the United States. Allen passed the bar exam in Maine in 1844 and became a Massachusetts Justice of the Peace in 1848. He moved to South Carolina after the American Civil War to practice law and was elected as a probate court judge in 1874. Following the Reconstruction Era, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked as an attorney for the Land and Improvement Association.

Come through Macon! Macon represents the theme of “Lifting As We Climb” which means he went and improved himself only to use what he learned to help others.

Quickie Post: Your Black History Fact & My February Jam

Let’s start this off with your Black History Fact of the Day!

gibson

Althea Gibson was an American tennis player and professional golfer, and the first black athlete to cross the color line of international tennis. In 1956, she became the first person of color to win a Grand Slam title (the French Open). The following year she won both Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals (precursor of the U.S. Open), then won both again in 1958, and was voted Female Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press in both years. She won 11 Grand Slam tournaments, including six doubles titles, and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame.

Come on Althea!

So if you think back to the first episode of Empire.  We opened with this song.

I’ve been listening it non-stop ever since.  I love her voice, I love the harmonies.  SO GOOD.

Quickie Post: Saaphyri vs. H-Town

So this was on my mind this morning:

Saaphyri is amazing. My personal favorite part of this is when Saaphyri yells “GET OFF OF ME!”  while clinging to H-Town’s hair.

Also: You better quit interruptin’ my prayers before God directs me to whoop your ass.

Your New Pop Queen: Sophia Grace

Listen, I’ve always seen it for Sophia Grace. because While she’s completely aware of the camera, she’s always acted like any extroverted child to me.  Not to mention that she and Rosie are super adorable.

So when this popped up on my timeline, I knew it was going to be cute.

But what I didn’t expect that I would hit a smooth two-step to it!

“IF YOU GOT A FRIEND LIKE THAT, LIKE THAT??”

Come through Sophia! My only question is where the f*** is Rosie?!?!?!  Rosie was the special spice, serving you Muted Princess Adorableness.  Is she not the best friend the song is about?

IS ROSIE ABOUT TO RELEASE HER DISS TRACK FEATURING THE MIGOS BECAUSE FAME GOT MISS SOPHIA????

Because that would be hilarious.

But on a serious tip, I have a deep and abiding love for child/teen-appropriate songs performed by people in that age group.  I don’t think it’s impossible to make good music for the children that’s actually enjoyable.  So go ahead and put this on Spotify!

A Hiatus & A Last Word

Hey everyone, this is going to the last post for a bit.  I’ll explain as this post unwinds.

To say that this week has been completely draining would be the understatement of the year.  There’s only so much rage you can feel.  There’s only so many days where you can feel hopeless.  There’s only a few times I’m going to let you tell me that wearing a suit will protect me.  We don’t want to hear any more lies or coverups.

While this blog has been amazing for getting these feelings out, I’m not really in a place to give you the fun stuff that attracted you here in the first place.  It’s not gone forever and there may be a post here or there, but for now, this is a smooth see you later.  But I do want to leave you all with a few mini-playlists to hold you over.  So here goes nothing.

It’s Friday!

Woo it’s Friday!

This is going to be quick, but I wanted to highlight Michelle’s new song “Say Yes” with a Destiny’s Child Reunion.

This is so cute!  I love the song.  I love that you can bop to this without it coming too close to “gospel rap” which is not fun for me.

But I just had to take a moment for all the YouTube haters out there like “How can Beyonce sing a song about Jesus when she sold her soul to the devil?” and “Michelle is autotuned”.

Girl.  Good.  Bye.

There is no room for anyone to judge but God.  We’re not trying to live for your glory.  So get out of their business and mind your own heavenly journey.

Tis all.  Make it a good day!
